The Bürgersaal (Citizen Hall) in the City Hall of Zittau

The most representative room in the city hall is the excessivly rich appointed Bürgersaal (Citizen Hall) in the first floor, which belongs to the most beautiful of its kind in Saxony. Attention should be paid to the opulent decorated ceiling of the hall and the tribune, which consists of structured plankings of the timberwork. The walls are adorned with bronze sculptures of famous landlords and mayors of Zittau, who were important in the history of the town. On high ledges are standing four live-sized figures who sybolize the patriotism, the harmony, the godliness and the assiduity and were created by the statuary Beyer from Dresden, who also formed the statues Themis, the wisdom and Sophia, the justice, at the main portal of the city hall.

The originally lead glass windows, which were designed in the same style like the ones in the staircase, were lost after world war II. Unfortunately they could not be rebuilded in the course of the true to the original restoration of the citizen hall from 1989 to 1992 yet. But the present windows mark a successful alternative solution, which gives consideration to the magnificent ambience of the hall.

In the corners of the large windows you can see six coats of arms. These are the coats of arms of Bautzen, Görlitz, Zittau, Kamenz, Lauban and Löbau, the member cities of the Oberlausitzer Sechsstädtebund (Upper Lusatian Six-city-league), which was founded in 1346 to protect the peace on the trading routes and against the disposal of the gentry and exists till 1815. In 1991 the reestablishment of this historical city-league took place.

The „Bürgersaal“ today bears its name rightly, because it is used for various social functions in Zittau. Beside the periodical sessions of the city council it is a place for numerous cultural meetings of the citizens of Zittau. Especially the concert series „Konzert im Bürgersaal“ (Concert in the Citizen Hall) during the winter months gets a festively frame here. Due to its modern conference equipment it can also be used for congresses and workshops. Visitations and guided tours through the city hall and the Bürgersaal are offered by the Tourist-Information all-season on Wednesdays 3 p.m.
