Zittau, the southeasternmost of Saxon cities counts among the most beautiful in the Free State of Saxony. Zittau received its town charter in 1254 from Ottokar II, King of Bohemia, which included the right to erect a city wall. The area designated by Ottokar II makes up today’s centre of town, demarcated by the Green Belt (Grüner Ring).
In 1513 as Zittau is becoming a hive of building activity, work begins on the reinforcement of the existing ringed city wall with several fortifications being added. The city boasted four guarded town gates: Weavers’ Gate, Bautzen Gate, Our Lady’s Gate and the Bohemian Gate. Since 1991 the old city centre has been designated a protected area. Thus Zittau can look back on a rich history.
